THE Story
Luna Solace is a retreat in Rotterdam designed to reconnect metropolitan life with natural and celestial cycles. Named after the Roman sun and moon (Sol and Luna), the project uses light, water, and tidal rhythms to create a contemplative space away from the speed and noise of the city.
Located in the Walhaven harbour, access to the structure is only possible at low tide, creating temporary isolation between tidal cycles. Visitors walk along a 500-metre pier through water, emphasizing the relationship between humans and nature.
Inside, a spiralling staircase leads to a subterranean water garden, where reflections of the sun and moon create a calm, meditative environment. The space highlights the effects of light pollution while reconnecting visitors with natural rhythms, encouraging reflection, stillness, and awareness of humanity’s place in the universe.
